HR Professional Development

An organization or institution is only as competent and successful as the Human Resources Department, responsible for the staffing and training of its employees. Human Resource professionals are critical to the operation of any business or institution, and as such, ongoing professional training will allow these key professionals to keep their "edge" and refine their talents. Jefferson College offers a variety of courses covering a variety of topics important to human resources including diversity, productivity, and trust.

Diversity Awareness in the Workplace

This instructor-led course explores diversity in the workplace. It begins by examining the various aspects of diversity, defining diversity and guiding students through a look at the components of diversity that they personally bring with them. The impact of perception is also examined. Stereotypes are identified and defused through an experiential exercise. Techniques to manage conflict successfully, communicate with respect, confront others who do not appreciate a diverse workplace and handling sensitive situations are examined.

Participants will take the Diversity Awareness Profile (DAP) as part of the course. The DAP will be invaluable to your employees by helping them to:

  • Become more aware of their behaviors and actions, whether obvious or subtle
  • Evaluate and understand how their behavior can affect a person of a different culture, gender, or ethnic background
  • Modify their behaviors and find the path toward respect for all people
  • Most people don’t sit down at their desks and make a mental plan to discriminate, judge, or isolate their colleagues. Even so, these behaviors still exist in today’s organizations. Understanding the presence of these biases is the first step to recognizing that diversity brings many advantages.
  • The Diversity Awareness Profile (DAP) assessment has helped millions of individuals in organizations improve working relationships among diverse co-workers and customers. How so? The Diversity Awareness Profile, commonly known as “DAP,” is a powerful 24-item assessment that helps people to:
  • Increase their awareness of the perceptions they have of others
Assess the behaviors that most influence interaction with others Modify behaviors to build respect for others
  • Based upon data gathered from focus groups, interviews, and thousands of diversity training sessions over the past twenty years, the assessment provides individuals with a Diversity Awareness Spectrum comprised of five categories of awareness that can gauge diversity awareness and the necessity of action within your organization and transform your diverse workforce from a liability to a strategic advantage.

Fee: $119   (Includes DAP Diversity Awareness Profile Assessment and instructional materials.)

But listening is the foundational skill that influences our communication and guides our actions.
